Oscar Pistorius apologises to Reeva's parents in court.

The long awaited testimony of Oscar Pistorius in the shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp came up today in his ongoing trial. Oscar broke down in the witness box and apologised to Reeva's parents for shooting her dead in his house last year's valentines day.

He directly addressed Reeva's mother who was sitting in the public gallery saying ''I was simply trying to protect Reeva. There hasn't been a moment since this tragedy that I haven't thought about your family. I wake up every morning and you are the first people I think of. The first people I pray for. I cant imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness I've caused you and your family.''

He also said he is taking anti-depressant medicine and that he sometimes wakes up in terror and suffering panic attacks. He told the court: 'I'm scared to sleep. I can smell blood and wake up terrified.'

The trial continues. See more pictures after the cut...
