Zimbabwe's vice-president, Joyce Mujuru has been accused of plotting to kill President Robert Mugabe.

Mujuru says she is taking legal action against state-owned media for linking her to an alleged plot to
kill the 90 year old president, and has ordered her lawyers to restore her "political standing" after being falsely accused of treason and corruption.

The Sunday Mail newspaper reported that a hit-man had planned to kill Mr Mugabe so that Mrs Mujuru could take power.

Continue after the cut...

President Mugabe, has governed Zimbabwe since independence in 1980, and said last month that he did not plan to step down.

Mugabe and Mrs Mujuru were once close friends, but have now fallen out as a succession war rages in the ruling Zanu-PF party ahead of its annual congress next month,

Mugabe's wife Grace Mugabe has been leading a sustained public campaign against Mujuru, calling on her to resign, and it is thought that the accusation leveled at Mujuru is Mrs Mugabe's handiwork.
