Zambian President dies in London.

Zambian President, Michael Sata has died in London at the age of 77, after receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

He was being treated in London's King Edward VII hospital when he died on Tuesday night 28th October 2014 of a suspected "sudden onset of heightened heart rate". His wife Christine Kaseba, and son, Mulenga Sata, were at his bedside.

The president's death comes just days after Zambia celebrated the 50th anniversary of independence from the UK. He is the second Zambian leader to die in office after President Levy Mwanawasa died in 2008.

It is not immediately clear who will succeed him but the issue may be decided by the Zambian cabinet which meets on Wednesday morning.

The Cabinet secretary Roland Msiska made the announcement to Zambians on national TV saying "It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing on of our beloved president, I urge all of you to remain calm, united and peaceful during this very difficult period."

May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.
