South African captain killed while trying to protect his girlfriend.

South African football team captain Senzo Meyiwa's life was tragically cut short when two gunmen entered his girlfriend, afro pop singer Kelly Khumalo's house in Vosloorus township.

Sport24 reports that Meyiwa tried to protect Khumalo when one of the gunmen pointed a gun at her, a move which resulted in him being shot in the back.

The Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Meyiwa, 27 years, and Khumalo have had a tumultuous relationship over the past few years and have a young child together.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. He leaves behind his estranged wife with whom he has one child.

Continue after the cut...

Fans of the goal keeper have been sending their tributes to the star over Twitter since the news broke.

Kelly Khumalo has left her home in Vosloorus, while Police cordoned-off her home, along with a neighbouring house on either side.

She left with her child and her sister while escorted by police and drove past neighbours and media who had gathered near her home.
